KEYNOTE ABSTRACT
An HIV/AIDS paradigm to overcome the
depression global crisis
Depression constitutes one of the major mental
health crisis today, and it virtually affects
every country and culture in the world. The
experiences with HIV/AIDS over the last four
decades are presented as a tentative model to
confront depression at the global level. It is
argued
that depression will only diminish if there is a
response that arises from different sectors of
society as demonstrated in HIV AIDS. In this
presentation, we will argue that disparities in
the treatment of depression, like in HIV/ AIDS,
will diminish when psychologists,
paraprofessionals and the like competently apply
empirically validated intervention programs
which take into account the cultural context in
which they occur.
