CONFERENCE ABSTRACT
Examining risk factors
associated with the mental health status of
American children
There is a need to identify the
underlying factors associated with many mental
disorders and conditions that begin early in
life. This presentation explores the
relationship between identifiable risk factors
and the mental health status of American
children using a large national random sample (N
= 524,581). Results show that the most common
risk factors significantly associated with
children’s mental health disorders and
conditions include substance abuse,
socioeconomic background and minority Status.
Implications for training medical and mental
health personnel, and outreach initiatives to
improve the mental health of status children in
America and around the world are discussed.
